Playtech Casinos Say Farewell to France
Friday, 02 July 2010 - 20:42
As a result of the recent changes to gambling legislation in France, all Playtech casinos have now stopped accepting wagers from players in the country. William Hill was the first to leave the French market and it is now becoming clear that all Playtech-powered sites will be joining them.
When the French decided to change their gambling legislation, they provided only a certain number of operators with licenses to accept wagers from France. Unfortunately for Playtech, they were not among the lucky few and they will either have to wait to be granted a licence or turn their attentions to other markets.
As much as many welcomed the change to gambling legislation in France, objections were raised by some, including the Maltese gambling authorities, as Malta has developed an industry around granting EU licences to online gaming companies. Before France, Italy had also reworked their gambling laws in a similar fashion and it is predicted that other countries in the European Union will follow suit.
Of course, these changes will also affect the players and with more regulated control over internet gambling, the less sites there will be to choose from. It is feared these changes could also lead to players' winnings being taxed heavily.
But on the upside, problems such as slow payment or lack of response to playing issues should be greatly improved and, all in all, these changes could provide a safer online gambling environment.
