New Online Casino Laws to be Revised in Denmark

Tuesday, 22 June 2010 - 20:57

On June 4 the Danish government passed new laws for online casinos operating in the country. However, the EU has since intervened and asked Denmark to reconsider certain aspects of these new regulations. This move has come after a number of complaints were brought forward, mainly from land-based casinos.

The EU has been largely accommodating towards the online casino industry. In Europe, most countries had a monopoly on gaming but now things look set to change right across the continent – France being a recent example.

These new laws are due to come into effect in January 2011, so there is still time for the Danish government to make any necessary amendments. Essentially they will require licensing and taxation of online casinos, following suit from the reworked gambling legislation in the UK.

The main issue is that the land based casinos feel their online competitors would have a 20% advantage when it comes to paying taxes. Of course this could backfire as it did in the UK, when taxes were raised to a level considered unfair by online casinos, who then moved to other locations like Gibraltar.

But even the casinos that left the UK are still required to pay tax in the country, as the law states that any online casino must pay their dues, in addition to having a license to operate. So there is still matters to be addressed for Denmark's new online gaming laws and the big names in the industry while be waiting expectantly for the final outcome. Party Gaming said they will only enter the country if the Danes managed to sort out their taxation policies.
