New Jersey Considering Change to Online Gaming Laws

Monday, 28 June 2010 - 18:22

Earlier in June, officials from the state of New Jersey held a meeting to discuss current online gaming law. New Jersey has now joined the list of other states that have sought to review regulations for online gaming and this is another indication that there will be more pressure for gambling restrictions to be lifted in the US.

Since 2005, online gaming has been illegal in the US, but there has been plenty of opposition against this law. Campaigners such as Barney Frank have been working hard to get a new gambling reform approved by Congress.

But the meeting of New Jersey's lawmakers, which was held on 4 June, was more concerned with local gaming operators and how the possibility of legalising online casinos in the state would greater serve these businesses. The Senate for Wagering and Tourism committee was also in attendance to hear the debate.

Although New Jersey can make amendments to their gaming laws, they will still have to follow regulations set by Congress. Essentially, online gaming users in the state will have greater freedom, but companies overseeing processing payments will still be unable to operate.

However, if they do decide to change these online gaming restrictions, it is likely that more US states will follow, increasing demand for Congress to revise the law. No doubt all eyes will be on New Jersey over the coming months – one change here could lead to a wide open US market, which will be a big stir-up for online gaming industry.
