ISPs in France Ordered to Censor Unlicensed Gambling Operators
Sunday, 22 August 2010 - 15:21It has been recently reported in the magazine Numerama that French ISPs will be forced to block access to online gaming sites not authorised by Arjel, the gambling regulator in France.
The French ISPs had gone to court to appeal against the order, claiming that it was impossible to block sites that were unable to defend their legality in court. They also drew attention to the fact that ISPs are exempt from liability for site content on their networks.
The court ruled that the ISPs would have to block unlicensed gambling providers, but it was agreed that to do so would prove technically difficult. The ISPs will have to do everything in their power to censor these sites, but it was also reported that they would be compensated for any costs resulting from this order – such an agreement has yet to be published.
